More about Mary's 2CV
Pottstown, Pennsylvania

Bastille Day in NYC, july the 14th 2002
All went very well here....In fact quite a great time. The car was very
good. There were many French cars at the rally. Everyone was in very good
spirits. My sister Barbara and husband Andrew were very excited.
We gathered in uptown Manhattan naturally making a fuss and a great deal of
noise. All the drivers were in happy moods. Many people came by to see all
the cars. Then you must know the story of Ehron and his friend.
They were very upset not to have their car, but wished us luck on the drive.
I could not believe they would think we would not find a way for them to
drive with us! Bastille Day and no Frenchmen on the rally! Impossible!
Sobecause my mother did not go I had an extra seat & I said to the people
parked by us, "Hey you want to take this French citizen with you?" Perfect!
No Problem! And so we were off to a very good start.
We had 2 stops along the way. I have given your card out and I was surprised
by the number of people who said to us, "Oh, a 2CV! That was the first car I
had, when I was a student." (All French they were)
The weather was very warm and the city had very many people...everyone was
just amazed at these curious cars. Many people asked to photograph
them...fine with me!
The car was very good to drive, even to New York, not difficult.
The Old Car Show - summer 2002
Dear Sylvain....I hope all is well with you....
the 2CV was a success at the
old car show. The organizers had me park her with the old model T Fords.
Next to me was a very old MGA.....in terrible condition....rust
everywhere...such a shame. On the other side was a beautiful old
Jaguar....very lovely. She was quite a success....the men naturally loved
the engine....what a powerhouse! A few of the women wanted their picture
taken in the car....fine with me! A very good time. |
Unexpected bad luck trouble... Sun, 22 Sep 2002
Now I had her out for a day drive and I had a problem, she is at the garage
now and the mechanic will look at her tomorrow, but maybe you can give me a
few leads on where to look for the problem. We were driving and I felt like
the engine 'skipped', after a few miles the problem was greater, and there
was 'we say' backfireing from the muffler, at this time the power began to
give out and she stopped! Now she was taken to the garage and on the way
there we described the symptoms to the mechanic and he said (this is just his
guess, as he has not looked at the car yet) that it sounds like a 'timing'
problem.
Any suggestions? I hope she will be OK and new soon....finally the weather
is nice and I would like to take her to another car show.
Also the society for old cars here in Pottstown wants me to join them...they
would like to see the only Citroen in their holiday parades....!
Let me know your ideas...
Note : As all ignition system was renewed before shipping, it is higly probable (99.99% regarding Mr Spock) that the trouble is an unexpected bad luck with sudden death of the condensator, which is rare but can happen and perfectly fits the symptoms.
Expected solution of the trouble - Tue, 24 Sep 2002
She is better! Voila! The condensator! First the mechanic who was not
familiar with the 2CV began slowly....maybe a wire, something simple....then
he thought points, plugs, condensator....maybe. He called and I said to him
I have all those parts. Rudy from CitroenConcours had told me to have a few
extra parts on hand just in case....and so I brought them to him....yes only the condensator! But he was surprised as he said the condensator looked fine to him, but when he put the new one in all was well. Now she is home and I am checking to see about another car show! :) The mechanic was very glad for the Haynes.... and all the other mechanics in the shop just loved it.... so simple! They were amazed at the 'powerhouse'! Next month I will take her back for the annual inspection! |
